I have been adding to my collection of micrometers by keeping an eye on eBay and snapping them up when I see them cheap. One of the reasons for this is that I recently needed to be able to accurately measure in the 100-125mm range, so I ended up buying a new V436.1MXRL-125 for $80 (shipped to PixMan). Now this is a very nice mic and worth a lot more than I paid for it, and I certainly have no issues with the price for the quality. Also, its need was pretty important. However, I did kick myself as when I bought the 0-100mm set there was a 436MRL-125 for around the $30 mark that I didn't bid on, as at the time I didn't think I would ever need one in that size range!

So - fast forward to now and I have a set of Starrett 436 mics that covers 0-200mm (approx 8"). I believe that this will suffice my needs and probably would have stopped at 150mm (6") but I saw the 175-200mm mic in a lot of 3 (another 436M-200 and a Prazision Falke 3-4" disc mic) for $30 and the 150-175mm for $20 and at those prices, I couldn't let them go. I'm going to sell the surplus 175-200mm mic and the 3-4" disc mic, both of which are currently located in MA.

One of the things that I found interesting was in one of the boxes there was a Starrett flyer, which I assume arrived with the mic when it was purchased new (although it may not be the original box). I thought it was interesting to see the price of the tools at that time and if I had to guess, I'd say it is from the 60s (the wooden box would suggest this period as well).

In the other box was a couple of drawings for a part (looks a little like a bearing race), with a date stamp on one showing 1967.

I thought I would share them with you. The flyer had to be scanned in 4 pieces, as it is an odd size (about 10" square). As such, I had to chop it up in photoshop, as the top 1/3 folds over and was upside down as a result when scanned. I haven't adjusted the size or the colours in any way, so the file is pretty big and I had to upload each page separately.

Hmmmm - I wonder if I could get Starrett to honour those prices

When I was packing the micrometers to ship out to you I saw those documents and thought you'd get a chuckle, so I shipped them out with the tool.

I'd seen the Starrett flyer before, it was the drawing of the SKF bearing outer race that I found most curious. Note how it's just the "roughing" drawing, and it would still be finish ground. I can imagine it would be using 5mm balls when assembled. The detail in the upper right shows .0042" for finish grind on the face, probable they wanted about the same on to O.D. I can just imagine those things being spit out by the thousands on a Brown & Sharpe No.2 screw machine, or more likely, a Davenport or Acme multi-spindle.

I'll try to get a photo of the Prazision Falke and the 175-200mm Starrett micrometers and post in the for sale section soon. It's been tough to get it done while still light out.

I'm glad you did Ken. I found them interesting, especially as they are older than I am. Makes you appreciate the time taken to hand draw them and I'm glad the sellers didn't just toss them out.

I didn't know what the dotted line and .0042 indicated. Nor do I know what the CL symbol on the top-Left of the second page indicates (looks a little like the 'cent' symbol).

No rush on the pictures, the suspense and anticipation may drive the price up

The "CL" is shorthand for "centerline".

Didn't you already give a good home to a beautiful Starrett No.486 1-2" blade micrometer? ;)

I found a photo of it, sold to you for (I think) $50.

I just noticed that I didn't actually post any pics of the micrometers (just the artefacts I found in the boxes)

The boxes were well aged and freshened up with some Ballistol. Spray on and leave a few minutes to soak. Wipe of the excess and then wipe over again with a clean rag.
