Here is the start of the lathe chuck plate i am making. I always was told use cast iron then i bought a few chucks that had steel plates and they work just fine. Then i bought a whole bunch more chucks and they needed back plates so steel is the easiest and cheapest for me. I used my trusty Miller 185 and solid .030 wire with 75/25 gas. Just my thoughts...Bob
Hi

You making lathe back plates or brake rotors??? Those pictures look like they came out of a NASCAR shop. (Back in the day, EVERY NASCAR shop ran MM 185 welders.)

:tongue::tongue::tongue:

Just funnin ya Bob... Smiley-signs107
I do need some new brake rotors for my Geo Metro LOL. I really like the MM185. I bought it in 1999...Bob
Bob,

How do those welds machine? I have a Millermatic 180 so my welder is similar to yours, only newer. I'd love to be able to get welds like that.

The welds cut real nice on the lathe with carbide. I am sure HSS would do the same it just won't hold the edge as long on a big surface. I used to fix all of my screw ups in the big shop with a mig. I bored 4" holes in 1/2" steel plate and if one got a little big i would just tighten it up with the mig :) and recut it. Here is a work pics from about 15 years ago...Bob
Bob,

What brand of MIG wire do you use?

Thanks,
Ed

Bob,

What are your opinions of the Hobart and Lincoln MIG wires? Do you think the HTP wire is superior?

Sorry, I guess I'm getting a bit off-topic. Blush

I bought a roll of mexican made Lincoln L-56 and never finished the spool i gave it away i wan't impressed. I did use the Hobart on my robot welder and the mig welder at work but i didn't like the price. I have been dealing with Jeff Noland at HTP for about 7 years since i get my tips and nozzles from him also. I just bought some Praxair .030 off ebay because i got it cheap but i haven't started using it yet. Sometime in the next few weeks i will need to reload. Now i also run .035 Inweld gas flux core on real thick stuff and i really like it as well as .024 silicone bronze on auto sheetmetal and the Crown Alloys cast iron wire on my cast iron. That about rounds out my wires LOL. And some 308 SS on my SS projects...Bob
