I always put 1-2-3 blocks on the table and tram the head to them. That way the indicator tip doesn't have go over the T-slots. I use a co-axial indicator holder to be able to sweep a wide area.

go to the parts store and get yourself a cheap brake rotor that is big enough to cover the table and use that to run the indicator on
