I was told the flat bar as sold is in the annealed state. However because the bars have to be straightened and this is done cold so there is a little induced stress.
A lot of the stress will come from the welding and cold forming mainly by me so the whole thing would need to be annealed and the process of heating it will cause distortion and may be some of the welds may crack in the process.
If I don't light a fire in it, then it should be fine Or use rivets as suggested earlier in this thread.

Get some silver paint Dave and it will look like stainless, at least till you use it.
By the way its good to see someone else do the old one set forward two steps back dance once in a while.

I have seen 'high temp silver paint' no idea how high temperature it is.

High temp paint for stoves will hold up to quite a lot. I've had my stove on the verge of glowing and the paint holds up, but fades a bit after time.

You "hang on a minute" Darren. I complain when someone posts with a quote of the post immediately preceding it.
As in post #3 (or whatever) has a bunch of pics in it and post #4 repeats everything in the quote.
I have no problem with quotes of posts that appeared a several posts or pages back.

I got some hot rolled 3mm x 30 mild steel - rolled the three rings, started to weld the smallest ring and my auto darkening mask seems to have broken http://www.metalworkingfun.com/showthread.php?tid=2621.
