Full Version: Resetting Tool Heights

Today, in the shop, I got wild hair crosswise and decided to change from the Dorian QCTP, back to the Aloris QCTP. So I spent a couple of hours resetting tool heights, as the Aloris is about 3/8" shorter than the Dorian.

I guess part of this is to determined, if I'm going to sell either of them. I really don't need two QCTP for one lathe. I not sure either is actually better than the other, but I used the Dorian for about 2 years, now I'll give the Aloris a shot.

It took some time to reset, the 44 QCTP blocks. I used a 4" hardened center pin, in the chuck, to set the center height for each tool.
I think both are equal in quality so i would choose one and sell off the other and invest in something else you need.

Aloris sell better on ebay.

Anthony.
That's a great point, Anthony. Aloris does have a better residual value. I've never noticed a difference in how either performs. Any advantage of one versus the other seems to come more from condition than brand name when at that level.
So much for that experiment, I switched back to the Dorian, reset all the tool heights and packed the Aloris up. The one thing I did notice, The Aloris has a greater handle swing, than the Dorian. I also had a swarf issue, I had a sliver of metal get into the wedge mechanism, that took about 10 minutes to rectify. Probably a one in a million thing, but the Dorian wedge is more enclosed. Still not sure if one actually better than the other, but after using the Dorian for the last 2 years, I guess I've grown accustom to it being on the lathe.
So, if I understand correctly, Aloris and Dorian tool blocks are interchangeable with each others tool post's ?

Yes. Some of the aftermarket ones may fit tighter on one or the other, though the "factory made" original ones are pretty good for swapping.
