Hi, I'm 59 and have never operated a lathe.
After watching John Mills, Keith Fenner, Keith Rucker, Tom Lipton, Mr Pete and Adam Booth for four years now I have succumbed and bought an old Smart and Brown Sabel from the estate of a deceased member of my motorbike club.
It is in decent condition and has loads of accessories and tools.
It has been separated from the countershaft so it could be moved so I haven't got it running yet.

I know it's a South Bend 9" clone - like others - but I could use an operator's manual to find out the specifics e.g. oil and or grease points and especially how the reverse lever is connected as it just flops around at the moment.

Lathes UK offer a complete data package for £60 but that's a bit steep at the moment having just bought the machine.

Any recommendations?

Thanks
John
Hello John,

Welcome to the forum.   Welcome

You might want to try downloading a Southbend manual from Keith's web site. http://www.vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex...1617&tab=3
Welcome John.

Welcome John!!! Do a google search for the South Bend book "How To Run A Lathe". It's an excellent resource. It's available in PDF.

As is the Machinery Repairman 3 & 2 http://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED203130

It was the "textbook" when I went through the US Navy's Machinery Repairman School.
Welcome aboard John!
Thanks for your replies folks - it's really appreciated.

Best Regards
John
Have a look here for great information about your Sabel and other machinery. Manuals for many machines are also available.

Edit: You can get a manual here also: http://www.machinemanuals.co.uk
Welcome John!

Those are a nice little starter lathe, fairly high quality build. Good luck fixing it up!
What is the main drawback of not being able to reverse the motor?

It looks like the motor has been changed and is a non reversible type.

The reverse switch at the rear has been removed at some time.

Thanks
John
