Full Version: Self setting parallels for the drilling vice

When drilling a part, supported by parallels in the drilling machine vice it is probable that, like me, you have had the problem of keeping the parallels away from the drill as the drill breaks through. The device in this video virtually eliminates the problem, except if any part of a holes diameter breaks into an area closer than 2mm from its edge. Even then, there are ways to avoid the problem whilst still using the device.

You will find a link to the video on this page http://www.homews.co.uk/page147.html

I know I have repeated the following many times but for those new to my videos an index of those already public can be found here http://www.homews.co.uk/page617a.html

Should anyone like to be added to my mailing list so as to get notification of new videos as they are made public then go to my corespondence page at   http://www.homews.co.uk/page6.html    and request to be added to my mailing list

Very nice design Harold. Took me a while to figure out how and where the springs were acting. Now you've given me another project to add to the long list.
Thanks for posting.
My vise jaws are the same length as my parallels. I've used the metal strapping used to hold bricks together with good success. Simply bend it into a "z" shape and it will keep the parallels pressed firmly against the jaws.

Certainly not as refined as yours Harold but it works for me.
A piece of squashy foam works well. Chuck it out when done :)
Both your methods are functional but not elegant. Its like having a Timex or a Rolex
Whilst I use the device, the subject of this thread, for the vice on my drilling machine table, I do use various forms of packing when using parallels in the milling machine vice. See here  http://www.homews.co.uk/page559.html  for an example.

Ah ha - I spot my squishy foam in one of your pictures Harold :)

I use this method also but usually when I'm clamping smaller items. I've had to make a few depending on the size of the item I'm clamping in the vise. Harold's device would work in most situations without modification.

Nice job Harold. I've added it to my list of projects also.

I normally use a compression spring when needed, but this is more elegant. Big Grin

Thanks for posting the design.
