Full Version: Mini-Lathe Bearing Puller

Drawings are done for the bearing puller. No guarantees that they're error free. I'm sure they're designed in metric but I used imperial caliper measurements. If I was making these parts I'd change the thread to 1/2-13.

You may want to consider 1/2-20 threads and purchase grade 8 bolts from you favorite supplier.
Agree with Dr. Stan. 1.75 is a coarse pitch, so it would make sense to use the same in SAE.
I agree that a fine pitch thread is most helpful for just about any puller tool. I don't know that I would go to the added expense of grade 8 bolts for this particular tool. They aren't going to get used very often (hopefully). But nothing wrong with using the stronger bolts if you want to.

One footnote: The collar with the keyway on sheet 3 is not needed for the puller set. It is included with this set along with 2 metal gears to replace the factory 2-speed spindle gear that is made from a single piece of plastic. They made the metal replacement gear as 3 separate pieces.

It will be nice to have Ed's drawings on hand though in case I bugger up one of the pieces and need to make a replacement some day.

I haven't read the instructions yet. I knew I should have because I know some of the parts in the kit are not used for pulling the bearings.  Big Grin

Yeah, those are going to need those special "stepped" keys too. Might as well include the extra plastic countershaft gear in the drawing while you are at it.  Big Grin  Rotfl

I'm going to take my chances with a couple of metal one piece high/low gears from China though. I would rather break the external gears than the internal ones. I get the idea behind only replacing the spindle gears with metal so you won't have to pull the spindle again if you break a plastic counter gear. But I don't want to have to disassemble 3/4 of the lathe to remove / replace and realign the head stock yet again to replace a plastic counter shaft gear later on if need be. I would rather put up with the extra noise. Big Grin

Well, I may end up using the bearing pulling tools sooner than I expected. My mini lathe is making a noise like noisy bearings. What's that technique for using a screwdriver as a makeshift stethoscope? Hold the handle to your ear and probe with the blade? Chin
