I agree, nice progress by all.

David: Where did you ever find a receiver casting for an 1885? I had heard they were once recast in a small quantity, but was never able to track one down.

Tom I was lucky enough to be introduced to the guy that was casting them, and mentioned that I had a set of plans and if I ever figured out what the heck I was doing wanted to build a rifle. And on day as if by magic the casting appeared on my back pack.

Rodney Storie, used to have a foundry where he cast quite a number of old single action rifle actions, but due to things beyond his control he had to shut it down.

You craved out the Stevens action, the 1885 would be lot easier as its open on the bottom, if a person was to attempt to make on I would either broach the block slot or do it on an EDM machine and use it as the base, only tricky part would be the ejector slot which could be done with EDM also the one little part at the to. You want I can take some photos and post em for you

That's a mighty nice gift.

I'm pretty sure I have the same plans set as you, but I'm not even going to look at them until the Steven's is finished. Thanks.

Great company Ed. This one virtually never leaves my sight or should I say me leave her sight. Travels on the snowmobile, atv, tractor, boat, anything that moves. Great nature, I've yet to hear her growl, but think she's protective, if someone is in the shop or house with me, she has to be at my feet.

Looks like I may be getting a shop helper after all. Next Friday, hopefully. Smile

Ed any updates on your QC inspector.
I haven't posted much about actually doing things in the shop lately but today I launched into a little project to restore a part for one of my old Allis-Chalmers tractors (old being older than me). I had this distributor mounting device that looked like this.

[attachment=9374]

Someone on the Allis-Chalmers forum suggested I insert a copper threaded piece and have it aluminum welded.

Soe I set about making the copper "plug".
After turning down the smallest piece of copper I had in stock I started to machine a hex head for the plug.
I only then thought of taking some pics.

[attachment=9375]

I then put the piece back in the lathe and turned the shank to 3/8" D.

[attachment=9376]

I then started to single point the 3/8-16 thread and found that copper behaves worse being threaded than turned,
probably due to my impatience to grind a proper cutting tool ( I had to rework the turning tool to get a nice finish to the 3/8" D
shank).
So, I decided to try the 3/8-16 threading die and with much lubrication and effort I got it to follow my ugly single point efforts.

[attachment=9377]

Here's what I took to my "Vulcan" that welds aluminum".

[attachment=9378]

The copper plug didn't "unscrew" as I had hoped but I had centre drilled both ends while in the lathe so I had no problem pilot drilling through from both ends and then drilling with a letter "N" drill which left me with a copper "half helicoil" that I removed with a pair of pliers.

A run through with the tap and here's what we have.

[attachment=9379]     [attachment=9380]

The newly welded aluminum did follow the "plug's" thread and so made a pretty good  "rethreaded" hole so I gues it did the job.
Maybe if I had dressed and polished the threads on the copper plug it would have un threaded all the way out? It did turn about 90°,
Next time (if there is one.)

Greg,

Unfortunately she has to go back to the rescue. She can't handle the 11 hours I'm away on work days. She gets serious separation anxiety. She chewed up the bottom of the door in the room where I put her while I was at work. Then she would whimper profusely and I'd have a hard time getting her to calm down when I'd get home from work. It's very stressful for her, and me. She needs to go to a home with people or other dogs around most of the day. It's too bad because she's a real sweetheart and a funny goofball. I'll be taking her back to the rescue either tomorrow of Friday. They already have another foster that wants her so that's the good news. They're going to watch for a more mellow dog for me that just likes to chill. I told them to wait until after the holidays and it gets more towards spring.
