Nice job getting that out without messing up the floor or other wood in the cabin.

Another break from the cabinet shop dust. A chap brought this in to see if it could be fixed. Front drive axle out of a 70 hp tractor, a new one is a little over $1000, so its worth a try, told him it would have a tail light warranty (the warranty lasts till your tail lights leave my driveway),



It fatigued at the snap ring grove. Odd pattern, it lines up to the yoke on the universal.



The plan is to drill the two parts and use a 1/4 inch dowel to align them. Chamfer the axle end weld in the core to say 3/4 inch, machine it down and put a split sleeve in and weld that up.

Just wondering is it hardened?

Dave, didn't appear to be hardened at the broken end but the spines look like they may have been.
Welded the two parts together with a dowel pin in the middle to line them up, then undercut the shaft for the two haves of the splice to fit in. The brass shim stock is protecting the seal surface from spatter.



Sorry forgot to get a shot of the welds. Machined it down to size. The chap has to bring the snap ring over so I can cut the groove for it. Will try a rounded bottom on the grove, might reduce the stress riser effect.



You can see the different grain structure in the weld areas verses the DOM tubing I used for the splice.

Tom Im hoping the sleeve will help key the part rather than one single weld carrying all the torsion in one spot. The root weld sits in the middle of the sleeve. Also it still needs a snap ring groove cut right where the repair would have been. The original failure propagated from the root of the groove. You can see the side of the groove on the failed part.
