Thanks, Arbalest, I was sorta hoping for an experienced green light to go ahead. I'm planning to clean up my grinding act here.
I have a nice Baldor carbide grinder with green gumbo wheels on it so I'm shopping for an appropriate 6" diamond wheel and an a white wheel for HSS. If I couLd use a belt for HSS as you have done I could mount a diamond cup wheel on the other side.
Any thoughts or comments from you or anyone would be welcomed.
Steve
I don't really think it makes much difference how you grind it Steve as long as you get the angle right. An offhand grinder should be fine. I only switched to belt grinding once I'd seen (and copied!) the Sorby setup as I think it's easier for sharpening wood turning tools etc.

This is my much modified BDS250

great work, and attention to detail!! Thanks for sharing it!
I picked up this little belt sander at an estate sale.

Got a few belts for it and tried it out on a wood chisel at hand.
Less than 2 seconds and the chisel hasn't looked this good in years!
Can't wait to get it out to the machine shop (BRR! -9° C) and try some high speed cutting tools on it.
