Yup, what he said.
It's largely superfluous to actually using the insert. In theory, you start with the fresh insert and the dot at the working corner. As the corner wears you index clockwise or counterclockwise, as you prefer and always the same.
In practice, I've never paid much attention to such things. A corner is a corner and I index in any direction as long as the worn edge isn't the one cutting anymore. The dot being there strikes me as being another case of a solution in search of a problem.

OK, I though as much but figured it would be better to ask just in case. Most of the inserts I have only have 2 or 3 usable edges, and I just avoid re-using the worn ones. Duh.
Finally got the obligatory tool porn shot...

I've decided to sell my Walter F2280.UB.051DC.Z03.04 face mill, after using it on the weekend on some 6061 aluminium. I had it loaded with ODHT0605ZZN-G88 WK10 inserts running at top speed (2500rpm), taking 6.35mm (.250") cuts and it was like a hot knife through butter, and left a beautiful finish.
So what is the problem you ask? Well it threw chips all over my shop and took ages to clean up

Build a couple of plexiglass shields mounted on cheap indicator magnetic bases. You can then position them to restrict the chips to a much smaller area.
Another possibly is mounting the end of a shop vac hose where it will catch the chips.

Cardboard and duct tape here.
Just another benefit of being an Amazon Prime member. A lifetime supply of cardboard boxes to cut up and use as chip shields, oil drain funnels, spray paint masking, dust pans......
