RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - PixMan - 08-29-2015 OK guys, I'll see if I can get a few of each style from my pal Jack and put packages together for you both and perhaps have a couple of each on hand. The current list price of the S-VMSP 100R 90CCC is $153, and the S-VMSP 138R 45CF is $183 so $80 for one of each is quite a good bargain. That said, NOTHING is a good bargain if you don't use it at least "now & then." EDIT/UPDATE: I checked with my friend and he said he still has a few of those cutters. I'll be meeting up with him Tuesday or Wednesday and might just get all he has for folks here. It's one of the most "multipurpose" tools ever created as far as carbide insert tooling goes. With the "end mill" version (S-VMSP 100R 90CCC) you can put the 3/4" shank in a boring bar holder and plunge up to about 2" deep. If the outboard insert is level with the centerline of the spindle, you can then use it to step over by up to about .340" and open up the hole you just made. In milling machines the same tool can plunge a hole, spotface, act and a bigger single edge shoulder mill (though not particularly well on that.) The "chamfer mill" (S-VMSP 138R 45CF) is more limited though makes a great chamfer mill for 45º chamfers up to about .340" wide, a countersink for holes between .900" and 1.300 or as a face mill with a .880" cut diameter. RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - EdK - 09-03-2015 Ken, What do you think of these inserts for the end mill and chamfer? http://www.hhip.com/metalworking/cutting-tools-indexable-carbide-tool-holders/inserts/sd/sd-322p-tin-55-carbide-insert-usa.html They say the are made in the USA but don't list a manufacturer. HHIP is an importer/wholesale operation. I've seen a lot of their stuff strewn out all over ebay and it all looks exactly like all the other stuff from India and China to me. There's a reason those inserts are so much cheaper then the good ones. I think I'll pass on those. Ed RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - EdK - 09-04-2015 How about these? http://www.carbidedepot.com/detail.aspx?ID=233997 I've never heard of CARBI-UNIVERSAL either but I certainly don't have a lot of carbide insert knowledge. Ed RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - PixMan - 09-04-2015 I've also never head of either of those brands and been in the carbide insert game for over 35 years. You pays yur money, you takes yur chances. RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - EdK - 09-04-2015 I'll steer clear of both of those then. Ed RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - EdK - 09-05-2015 I found these and ordered a pack of 10. They're genuine Valenite inserts so I hope I got a good deal, or at least a reasonable deal. I've seen these Valenite inserts going for about $25 each. I know it says they're for cast iron, nickel- based alloys, titanium alloys, wrought & cast aluminums but hopefully they'll work on other metals also. http://www.tools-n-gizmos.com/store/agora.cgi?user2=yes&p_id=26501&xm=on&ppinc=1a Ed RE: Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills - PixMan - 09-05-2015 Those are a C2 (ANSI) M10/M20, K10/K20 (ISO) class of carbide insert. It's got a TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating. The description given on the website is accurate. You can use them in steels, just be careful about cutting speed. In steels, keep it under 300 sfm and you shouldn't have any problems. Ed, I stumbled upon a pack of inserts in the VP5142 grade on ebay (last one they had) and Ken gave them a thumbs up so I jumped on them. I don't usually have that kind of luck. But I paid TWICE what you did so..... By the way. Ken, probably a dumb question, but what is the purpose/significance of the little round dimple near the upper right corner of the insert? I've seen them on other brands as well and I'm just curious. |
