Two lads had been given the job of making the carb so first a casting was made and machined. a sliding throttle in the top and adjustable jet in the bottom.

Note the float chamber is separate to allow easy adjustment of the fuel level.

I'm really enjoying this thread Brian.

RE: A student project - Brian - 06-22-2013

OK I have returned. otherwise I will get into trouble with Mayhem
When we had made the major components, the engine was assembled. To ensure that errors that crept in during manufacture did not affect the build the positioning of the main bearings was left to last. then the piston was placed at TDC and the holders welded in place ? ? ?

Having got it together we clamped it to a metal bench for test.
The following pages are taken from the project log.

This was the end of the first year 33 days of go go go.

Not bad for 12 lads that had never used machines before.

[attachment=5610]The next year with a fresh intake of first year students the job was to make a car to take the engine.Again a visit to the science museum. to stir the imagination and then to work we are aiming at 12 to 15 mph at a engine RPM of 1500--1750 so gear ratios where calculated and sprockets made the teeth numbers being divisions of 360 to make life easy.
