church keys - the artfull-codger - 08-07-2013

[attachment=5895]Hi A couple of keys I was asked to make for our local church in the village, the stem was turned in the lathe,& the part for the bow was turned to a smaller diameter, then transfered to the mill & a slot milled out 3/4 of the depth of the stem for the 3/4"x1" x1/4" blank to fit in, & this was silver soldered in,then it was marked out & cut out with a piercing saw by hand then filed up with various needle files, the bow part was split down carefully with a junior hack saw, then heated to bright red & forged to shape with the join at the top welded together to form the bow, finally all polished up & a walk over the road to try them.[they worked!!!] These were made 2 yrs ago,I made some others anbut 20 yrs ago & they're still o-k, I suppose the original ones would be a forged blank but these have stood the test if time.

Very nice
I am sure a job like that will help to get you a place "upstairs"

Top class job WorthyWorthy, they have a nice classy look to them , the fact they worked first time shows you must have filed them spot on, as John says .......must give you a credit for getting a good spot 'upstairs' too
Cheers Mick.

Artful
nice job on the key's your probably right that the first one's were forged with a hammer and the tumble slots were filed by hand. The harder part would be to make the locks that the keys fit.

Nice work , as for a place upstairs I figure you go to heaven for the weather and hell for the company.

A church key in these parts has a totally different meaning.

Ha ha ha John, well at my age it's getting nearer & nearer,& you've got to keep in with the ''big fella'' upstairs!! but I'll probably be ''down below'' stoking the boilers up rather than ''upstairs'' enjoying beautifull women & champaign!!
Graham.
