Shapers who else has one? - aametalmaster - 03-24-2012

I am old school and just love shapers. Learned how to run them in the early 70's in metal shop then a year later in Vocational Machine Trades where we had bigger ones. Didn't know at the time they were almost obsolete until i got in a few real shops. So anyway here is my little 7" SBL prob from the early 50's since it isn't the newer oil pump model from the 60's. I paid 300 bucks for it 3 blocks from my house. I looked for years online for one but they were too far away. I made the round corner stand since i wanted the old time look. Enjoy...Bob

Love it I would sure like one, been looking for several years but the only ones I find are on E-bay and go for ridiculous amounts plus 5to 7 hundred shipping. I am going to build onr from Gerard's plans once they are completed. Too bad the Chinese don't make a reasonably priced copy of a 10 to 12 inch model. tom

I have a 24" G & E that for a time I cut a great many internal splines with. I have milling capability, so I don't use it for flat work in general, but internal work, you bet!

It weighs about 8,000 lbs. It was a WWII USN piece.

I bought a 16" Queen City shaper a couple of months ago and am in the process of getting it back to working condition.

I'd love to have one also and will end up making one, like Tom will, from Gerard's plans.

Shapers are slow ,, but the tooling is cheap and you get a great flat finish ,,,,,,,, i would not part with mine ,, and in my humble opinion they still have a place in the home shop.

Rob,

That's so cool. Cool

It looks like a ground surface.

Cheers Ed Big Grin

It is very close to looking like a ground finish ,,,,The shaper is also great on softer materials ,,,,,,,,,,,,, i once had to make a few copper cubes for a welding machine about 2x2x2 and got an excellent finish on the copper .
