Spindle thread protector - Shawn - 12-07-2013

This is something I have been wanting to build for awhile. It only took a few hours, most of that was boring out the hole in the hot rolled bar. Man the skin on that stuff is tough, once through that though, it machined pretty nicely. I started this project yesterday but had to scrap it when I discovered the internal threading bar I bought had a brazed tip with a totally wonky grind? It was no where near 60 degrees and the resulting threads were a really bad fit. I made my own and it worked much better.

Good practice for the ER32 spindle chuck I will build next.

Nice job Shawn

Thanks Mayhem, its cool for me as a relative newbie to see things starting to come together, both in my understanding of how it's done and my ability to do it.

Looks real nice Shawn. Yours will be inspiration for when I finally get around to making one for my lathe.

Thanks Ron and John. I don't even really have a need for a thread protector on my spindle but I thought it would make for a good trial run cutting the internal threads, my next project is a ER 32 collet chuck that needs the same threads cut. It was your video's John that gave me the confidence to go ahead and try building the collet chuck. I really enjoy your video's, I get a good laugh and learn something every time I watch one.

Cheers
Shawn
