My experience is "it depends".
I am assuming we are talking about isopropyl alcohol. I have 70% and 91% ... what you usually find in the local drug store ... and it seems to be pretty useless. Mineral spirits or acetone seems to work at least as well or better.
I have some 99.9% that works really well, especially when cleaning flux from electrical circuit boards.
40% Vodka only gave the impression of doing a great job.

I suspect the screw can be run through to release the spring without stretching it, but I normally just clean mine with solvent while assembled. I use clock oil as a lube so it doesn't gum up.

I've just discovered that you have to really watching your spelling and/or disable predictive text when you do a Google search for clock oil

I use a small ultra-sonic cleaner to clean mine occasionally. I found the cleaner at a Good Will Store.
