Lathe table - confederatemule - 03-04-2015

I am trying to plan how to set-up my lathes. Which is best? On a table of some sort or on legs attached to the lathe mounting pads.

I have one on a bench and one on legs. I prefer the legs.

How big is your lathe?

Craftsman 12x36 quick change and South Bend 9c, 9x30.

It's kinda hard to see in this crappy picture, but I made a few wooden lathe stands.
I used to have plans from some old magazine, so it is not an original idea.

I lost the plans, but it's just 2x12 cut at an angle for the legs with 2x material for the front board. The sides and back are 3/4" plywood that is rabbetted, glued, and screwed to the legs.
They don't look like there's much to them, but they end up very strong.

My Rong Fu mill sits on one too.
I can get better pictures if you're interested.
The top is just two layers of 3/4" plywood, with marine varnish.

It's kind of a combination of the table and legs. I usually add a shelf under to hold stuff.

I've never had just the legs. My 12" Atlas came with the factory stand.

Found a better picture.
Never mind the mess, it always looks that way.  Rotfl

I think I'd like to put two of these side by side and put a lathe on top. But ...? Decisions decisions.

I would do it *IF* they are relatively the same height (shim to level) and you could remove some drawers from them temporarily and bolt them together. Or, weld them together.

I agree
