Got the pallet cut away so I could get the cherry picker in far enough to lift the head off. Ruined three reciprocating saw blades in the process. I think it's stable as is so I can start removing pieces.

Well this is not going to work. I guess I need to cut those wings off so I can get the cherry picker in further. Good thing I've got three more blades.
Oh, and that lifting strap is not the only one I'll be using.

Slow progress is still progress Ed. This is something that you don't want to rush, as the consequences are serious. Whilst this is probably not going to be of much use here, here is a picture of the stand that I made to remove the head from the knuckle on my Kondia:

Perhaps if you have a large enough piece of round stock held in a collet, you could do the same. It really does make getting the head off and on so much easier, as the mill holds the weigh and you use the various axis to line everything up and keep it aligned and level.
