Don't think a 3 phase motor can be rewound for single phase Bob. You need a start winding and switching to disengage it.

A 3 phase motor can be run on single phase with just a capacitor - admittedly with a lower starting torque and overall power

Bob,

This may be the time to invest in a RPC Rotary Phase Convertor.  I use this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-HP-ROTARY-PHASE-CONVERTER-CONTROL-PANEL-tuned-for-3400-3600-RPM-idler-motor/300553553557?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38530%26meid%3Dcb3d4ffd96d34f92a7bbf2efac265543%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D300526178147

I have it set up so I can run my Logan lathe and my 6X12 surface grinder, just not at the same time.

You couldn't ask for a nicer and ethical man.  You'll need to also buy a 10 hp 3 phase motor to complete the set up..
