Bunch of used grinding wheels - any use?? - SteveG - 08-27-2017

Came across a cheap bulk lot of used grinding wheels today. Most are around the 10-12" size and have a large bore, so I'm guessing they're from a large surface grinder?

I don't have a surface grinder but DO have a 12" pedestal grinder that I rescued from being scrapped a few months back. Haven't done anything with it yet apart from bring it home, but maybe these wheels could be used on that?
I've only ever had experience with bench size grinders, none with larger wheels so it might be one of those "don't even think about it" ideas though....

When 1/3rd of a grinding wheel has been consumed it is best practices to dispose of the wheel.

So you're saying those ones are already worn out?

I had a 60 grit 6" wheel that was worn to about 5" or less. I replaced it and broke it in 3 pieces on purpose.
I use it to hand hone an ax or hatchet. I gave away the other 2 pieces. Might even work for lawn mower blades though I never tried it.
