Setting the lathe compound - Vinny - 12-10-2019

Took me a while to find this video, it's posted here somewhere but all I could find was the link to all of his videos. Joe's a member here but I haven't seen him post lately.

Setting the Lathe Compound to Precision Angles

Yeah, he is the reason I now have two of those vintage indicator holders. Also have one of his rotary table alignment pins (nice tool), since I don't have a surface grinder to make my own. Dang these people with good ideas always end up costing me money!

LOL, they sure do. I watched that video again today and I think this was the first time I noticed that I have that same indicator holder. Not as nice and shiny as his, but it works!

Vinny, does yours have 2 or 4 plates for the magnetic body? I saw Joe has 4 plates on his but both of mine only have 2. One is made by General Tool and the other is a Craftsman - but they are virtually identical.

I'm just wondering if the General Tool Joe has is a much older unit and they got cheaper later on? Curious if you have 2 plates or 4 on yours. Chin

Two plates. I had to take the scotch brite to it, but I am now able to see the brand. It's also a Craftsman - and it now has some shiny spots on it!

I stuck mine in the ultrasonic when I got them because they were a little cruddy. (eBay)
Clean as a whistle now but it peeled a lot of loose paint off too. Luckily a can of silver hammer finish paint is pretty cheap. Smile

Mine isn't painted. Might have been at one time but it's just got surface rust and no sign it ever had any kind of finish on it.

Maybe mine are just later production then. There are pics of them online with and without paint. Probably just an attempt to keep them from rusting while sitting on the shelves.
