MYFORD RACK PINION. - bodger - 02-17-2024

Hello everybody, I have an old Myford ML7 lathe which I have stripped down with a view to cleaning it and doin any repairs etc. I have found the the rack pinion assembly which has two gears together has a tooth missing on the gear that connects to the long toothed rack. This did not seem to have any bad effect. The two gears seem to be heat shrinked together and I would like to know how hard it would be to separate them. If I could do that I may try and drill two holes tap them and insert a stud which could be filled down to replace the missing tooth. The gears are mild steel. A new assembly is £70 and as I am 84 money has got to be watched. Thank you in advance for any advice.
