Shaper toolholders - Sunset Machine - 08-12-2012

The toolholder on my shaper is missing, other than a large bar holder style. The lantern style looks universally accepted, I'll have to carve one out. Any pics of other toolholder styles? I have a stepped bore for it to fit, 2" x 1-1/2".

A search for "clapper box" should yield some results.

these may help you will probably have to change the measurements on the drawing. for slotting a crane neck or goose neck tool will help eliminate chatter

Here's the one on mine. As for tool holders I've been using the old Armstrong left right and straight. They work beter for getting into dovetails and corners, you can have less tool sticking out.

Forgot to mention, with the lathe tool holders the cutter sits angled to give the necessary negative rake (I think thats what its called) on the top of the tool. With the shaper tool holder you have to grind that angle into the top of your cutter, as the cutter is held perpendicular to the work.

RE: Shaper toolholders - big job - 08-13-2012

Ok while on the subject it has been said or wrote some say to use the
Williams style with the 16 degree angle and some say do not. (backrake)
Since going to a qc tool post on my SB lathe, all the lantern stuff got
donated to the shaper (Atlas). Most of the time I dont even use a
holder cause my holders are limited to 1/4" so I just shim up 3/8 bits.
And then I made my own key, spline, internal gear holder from my
old boring bar. I tend not to believe what I read and hear about, I do
what works for me. I read somewhere on a site if a twist drill can be
used on shaper or lathe. Absolutly, especialy facing on a lathe. So all
I can add is, it amounts to grinding the HSS blank.

You can use lathe tool holders on the shaper but they must be the ones for carbide bits. Those will have 0ยบ back rake.

Actually, I was referring to the toolpost. What I've seen is 100% lantern style, rake and clearances about 1/2 what we use on a lathe. No yokes, no QCTPs, just lanterns. So I proceed to make one and find that a 3/4" dimension is not the same as 3/8" and now have a big hole in the wrong place... Slaphead
