Made a trip to the scrap yard with my 84 year old friend, who heard they had a bunch of stainless come in.
Both bought some stainless, and i also found a piece of brass flat bar 3/8 x 1 1/2 x 40 inches long.
Good things to have in inventory. Lol

Funny you should talk about scrap.
I went down to the aluminum center today to buy some extrusions and they also sell off cuts from 6mm plate up to 100-150mm thick. I asked the guy if it was still $8 a kilo which I thought was expensive, he said no it's now $10 plus gst which is 10% so $11 a kilo, what do you guys pay?.
I bought 2 kilo but will have to start looking elsewhere as that is way to expensive for scrap even if it is handy and has most sizes in stock all the time. The off cuts are new and from the Sydney shop where there cutting stuff for big clients.

broached it, in my horizontal press using a regular keyway broach, with the bushing that I made when I made the two groove sheave out of aluminum.

Nothing to brag about but at least I got something done in the shop this evening.

These bolts screw into the back of my Kurt vise and are tapped 10-24. I'll use a couple of 10-24 button head cap screws to attach the rod to the bolts.

Dave J asked in a couple of posts back, what we paid for the stainless and my brass.

The stainless was 1/16th thick,, sheets 36x30 inches we paid $5.00 each. The brass i gave the guy $5.75 for it. This is used , but good clean pieces.

Today I set about repairing the damage to the intercooler from the boat engine.
Some time in the past a engineer ???? had fitted the exhaust injection elbow to the alloy manifold/ intercooler using a copper gasket!!
The resulting electrolysis caused the damage seen in the photo.

Jawdrop

So I mounted the casting on the mill ---Just.

And took a skim to see the damage.

The strength of the casting was OK but the gasket face was shot.
so I cleaned out the damage, made a spacer from a scrap pulley.

Bonded the spacer in with Hi Temp epoxy, then cleaned it up

It's a great feeling to have the ability to repair something like that rather than replace it. Excellent work Brian!

Brian, did you have to stop the mill and advance the "facing tool" in your boring head or does it auto feed?

A really good fix Brian Smiley-signs107
