That's a nice hammer you made there John.

Funny thing about lead hammers. I don't have a mold but I do have a lump of lead big enough to make at least two of them, perhaps three. It's a ball about 4-1/2" (115mm) in diameter that was lying on the gutter of my street last year. My next door neighbor and I were both just arriving at our homes at the same time, and both spotted a gray ball in the gutter. Him, being about 18 years older than me took longer to get to it than me, so I had it in my hand and used the "finders keepers" rule. He conceded without any quarrel. Unusual thing for him!

Other than having nothing to melt it into, I've not pursued melting it down because I still wonder if it's an old cannonball or something. It's pretty rough from apparently having been rolling around the pavement for a while, so no markings on it are to be found.

Been going to cast a lead hammer for ages, its on the list, but a buddy gave me a dead blow hammer, its not lead, seams harder, doesn't mark easy, but has no bounce, slight copperish colour, anyone have any idea what it might be made of?

More headway between could you do this's today. The long beams are done, now just 7 short cross beams and 28 knee braces, not much left if you say it fast.

The lap joint in these beams.

Ordered the doweling to put it together, thought about making them till I realized I needed 112 - 1/2 inch dowels and 62 - 5/8

It might be bronze. I have a bronze hammer but I don't remember why I got it. 17428

Bronze would be my wager too. though there are hundreds of different copper/tin/zinc alloys, only a few are suitable for hammers because you need something relatively soft but that which won't pein over and throw chucks off it's edges.

Might be, has a cast look to it, will try and remember to get a picture. Definitely not brass. Works great for setting stuff in the milling vice or lathe chuck.

Possibly Beryllium copper?  (Non-sparking.) Good tools to have around when working on aircraft fuel systems along with explosion proof flashlights and lots of static ground cables.  Big Grin
