Yes, a mechanical chip breaker, it is slotted to allow some adjustment. I pushed the chip breaker as close as I could to the cutting edge, as the chip breaker is also the insert clamp, this offers the most support to the cheap insert. Thus leaving the least amount of the insert exposed. The Aloris AXA16, is an expensive tool, which is somewhat strange, an expensive tool and a dirt cheap insert. While I have used it quite a bit in the past, it now resides in the storage drawer, I do pull it out from time to time. I get better results with other insert/tool combinations.
