This particular L5 does have the smaller spindle 1 1/2" 6 tpi nose
I wonder how you find using the L5 ? I am yet to try mine out . I did fit a larger pulley to the motor , this will increase speeds a bit .
I think it may have been made around 1957 ? The serial nr is 115759
Ok the cabinet door, yes its a steel construction. The large hole next to the door is where the switching cabinet was , for controlling the DC motor . The DC motor has Ministry of Defence markings on it .
Luckily for me, I can use your rebuild as a guide .
