I doubt that a rotary table would be free enough. Maybe you could just mount it on a bolt with a couple of jam nuts to take up the end play. Then mount the bolt in the tool post of your lathe and the tap in the spindle. Use a bolt with an unthreaded shank so it doesn't chew up the bore of the gear.

To follow on from Tom
Then use a taper tap in the chuck set the cross slide to the correct depth for the pcd then use the compound or saddle to feed onto the tap, do not plunge cut as shown in the video.
If the tap has a point use a hollow center to support it, hollow centers can be made by simply center drilling a piece of bar grease well.
