Press brake for 20 ton hydraulic press

All the press brakes I have seen and worked with have a small bottom 'V' may be 1/2" deep, most had a maximum capacity of 2mm thick steel.
So do I need the 'V' to have long sides - does it help to bend the odd 5mm thick piece of steel?
