Indexable insert face mills and shoulder mills
#61
OK guys, I'll see if I can get a few of each style from my pal Jack and put packages together for you both and perhaps have a couple of each on hand.

The current list price of the S-VMSP 100R 90CCC is $153, and the S-VMSP 138R 45CF is $183 so $80 for one of each is quite a good bargain. That said, NOTHING is a good bargain if you don't use it at least "now & then."

EDIT/UPDATE:

I checked with my friend and he said he still has a few of those cutters. I'll be meeting up with him Tuesday or Wednesday and might just get all he has for folks here. It's one of the most "multipurpose" tools ever created as far as carbide insert tooling goes.

With the "end mill" version (S-VMSP 100R 90CCC) you can put the 3/4" shank in a boring bar holder and plunge up to about 2" deep. If the outboard insert is level with the centerline of the spindle, you can then use it to step over by up to about .340" and open up the hole you just made. In milling machines the same tool can plunge a hole, spotface, act and a bigger single edge shoulder mill (though not particularly well on that.) The "chamfer mill" (S-VMSP 138R 45CF) is more limited though makes a great chamfer mill for 45º chamfers up to about .340" wide, a countersink for holes between .900" and 1.300 or as a face mill with a .880" cut diameter.
