Clausing 8520 restoration

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to start a thread about the restoration!Big Grin
So far most of it is done and painted.
Ordered a bunch of replacement bearings as the old ones were beyond repair. They were not bad but had a lot of tight spots that started to annoy me. Best to get it done while it is apart!

I hurt my neck and back a while ago so progress has been slow...:@

Last night i attacked the dirty brown Palmgren vise.
About 2 and a 1/2 hours later i ended up with a very nice and clean vise!Big Grin
Anyone know where to get replacement jaw inserts from?
I will do a small thread about the vise cleaning too!
I took lots of pictures and then got into it and forgot to take a few...Slaphead

As for the mill, i just need to sand and then prime and paint the main column! Then it is assembly time for most of the mill.

I have not disassembled the head yet. Will get to that soon.
Although SWMBO has other plans about renovating another room upstairs...Whip

The odd looking surface is some rust preventative i am trying!
It is from an aerosol can and is a mix of oils and something called "Wool Wax"
So far it is keeping the surface nice and clean!

I'm looking at having to do the same thing to my bridgeport head in the future. Sounds like I got an upper bearing on its way out. Might just go ahead and do spindle bearings while I got it tore down that far.

Okay guys!!!
almost all the painting has been done and some small bits reassembled!!
I am not going to do the head yet as it seems to be in pretty good condition.
It will be a different colour and that might motivate me to get it done sooner...

I ordered new bearings for the hand cranked leadscrews and need to install them.
The old ones were a PIA to remove and required a bit of persuasion with Mr. Hammer.

What would be the best way to install the new bearings without damaging them?

If you can press them in. A drop of oil can help. But they should not be too hard to press in.

Use the correct size drift - which means it needs to be round, (and may be hollow)

Try not to transmit any force through the balls. So if you are fitting the outer, force should only be applied to the outer part of the bearing.

Similar to fitting to a shaft, the force should only be applied to the inner part of the bearing.

A good hard push fit is really all that is required.

What i ended up doing was to put the lead-screw in the freezer and the bearing under a halogen light for about 15 minutes each.
Popped on just perfectly!!Big Grin

Well the mill is back together!!!!
Took the whole weekend to put back together...Smile

Now i need to get the VFD and hook it all up!
Will also need to make a mount for the VFD.

Still have the head to disassemble and paint but i want to try it out and see if i need new head bearings as well!

Will be doing a write up with pics soon!!!

The pics are all done and the mill back together again!Big Grin

Just need to find some time to sort through all the pictures and do the write up...Ouch

Some things i did not take pictures of though...
The x axis leadscrew nut had some serious amounts of backlash.
What i decided to do was line the inside of the nut with JB Weld and lube up the lead screw. Screw it all together and let it set.

Worked like a charm!!!
Backlash is down from around 15 thou to about 1/2 a thou!!
Will have to see how long it lasts and may end up making a new one at some point.

My VFD has arrived so i need to get that all hooked up and mounted!!
The the acid test of how it runs!

Hopefully get the write up done soon!
