OK - well today I removed the backplate from the chuck and realized that I will have some trouble making a new one without a chuck! So, I grabbed a boiler slug and marked out the holes, so I can bolt this to the backplate. I will then machine this to fit the 3-jaw and from there I will make my dummy spindle nose and subsequent backing plates. The original one will then be returned to the old chuck.
I used dividers to mark out the bolt circle but trying to set to a hundredth of a mm was difficult, so I got it as close as possible and then used transfer punches to mark the hole centres. As I don't have a 5/8" transfer punch, nor a working lathe to make an adaptor, I used a socket. Quick, easy and does the job. A wrap or two of tape can be used to get a better fit but you have to make sure there are no overlaps.
I had to leave it here, so will have to finish it off next week.
