Out with the old, in with the new (used)

I finally decided to move up to 21st century milling cutters. The ones I had were good and in near-new shape, but I wanted to be using newer technology. I got all these Walter cutters (plus two more) in a package deal of unspeakable value.

Sorry for the crappy late-night photo. I'll get better ones later. The package included, from left, F4080.UB26.075.Z06.04, F4033.UB.064.Z06.06, F2280.UB.064.Z04.04 face mills, and F4042.UB.051.Z07.08 shoulder mill. I actually got two more, a second F2280 like the black one and a cool little F4080.UB.064DC.Z06.03. That one takes a smaller ODxT0504ZZN insert than the ODxT0605ZZN that the two cutters shown use.

I will seek bargains on more R-8 shell mill adapters so I can keep them all mounted and ready to use. No hurry for the amount of milling I really do. I did buy a pack of 10 ODMT0605ZZ-D57 WKP35S inserts off eBay for $70 shipped, that should last me a good long time with 8 edges per insert.

I've been looking at some brazed carbide side mills. Very cheap, so much so that I'm leery: a 6" diameter, 1" wide, 6 tooth cutter for $20, brand new. Am I going to be able to cut a deep 1" slot in steel with it in a 2 horsepower horizontal mill?

Is that a slotting cutter? The brazed carbide ones are usually good for a few passes before the carbide needs resharpening. Then you need a good tool & cutter grinder with a diamond wheel.

Most have straight-cut teeth that use a lot of horsepower. If that one is that, better to hold off and look for a good alternating angle staggered tooth HSS cutter. Your mill will have more power geared down to speeds appropriate for HSS cutters.

Thanks mate. I'm giving up the 90º shoulder mill on the right and holding out for a 2-1/2" F4041 like the ones Russ and Ed have. Those are the cutters I drool over and now regret selling off a couple that passed through my hands.

So if I'm reading this correct, the F4042.UB.051.Z07.08 you are going to sell off is a ø2.000" cutter that takes AD..0803 inserts. So this is a larger diameter, 'longer' bodied shoulder mill than my F4042R.UB13.038.Z06.10 but actually takes smaller inserts (mine takes AD..10T3..). Or have I got this confused?

The F4041 family appear to take a LN..1307.. insert. Is it just the photo in the catalogue, or are these inserts as thick as they look? The look massive! They also appear to have that nice angle that reduces the force required to make the cut.(I'm sure there is a technical term).

Referring back to your OP, I was wondering if you have a pic of the F4080.UB.064DC.Z06.03 face mill? I'd like to see that one, given your description of it Big Grin

Turns out it's a 2" cutter, not a 2-1/2". F4080.UB19.051.Z04.03

Is that scale about 2`infront of the cutter? It reads about 2.375".

No, it's right on the cutter face. The reason it's "full diameter" is bigger is because being designated "DC" (diameter cut) it can cut a full 2" face width. The black 4-insert cutter you see in my first photo is also a 2" face mill, but can only cut 1.69" full width.

Note in the photo above how the cutting tips of the inserts (at the face) hit the scale at 1/4" and 2-1/4".
