Largest Threads we've ever made.
#1
We had a job in house a couple months ago that was a bit of challenge at first.

1.750-6 Threaded Shafts 7.5" long.  Material was C1144 Stressproof Steel.

First of all, it required the use of our tailstock, which to be quite honest, I have had VERY limited experience using on this new machine.

Second of all, the there was very little room to get tooling into location at the start of the part due to the center for the tailstock being down inside a counterbore at that end of the piece.

In any event, with the help of Pixman, and several others in another machining forum, I was able to successfully get these parts made, and was very pleased with the results!

Never again will large course threads be a cause for anxiety, because these surely were!!!

I just love how nice those came out! The quality of the threads is why I've become such and advocate of using the lay-down threading inserts for getting beautiful burr free threads.

While the parts look stunning, I believe it's your getting comfortable using the tailstock and live center on the machine that is the greater achievement.

Those of you who haven't yet taken the plunge into using lay-down full-form threading insert tools can see the benefit of spending the money right there. perfect burr free threads with nice finishes are easily achievable. The tools can be found on eBay for cheap if you know what to look for and are patient and diligent in looking. I got my collection of internal and external toolholders and inserts over a period of a half-dozen years, and have made beautiful threads like those in all materials.

Well worth the investment of time and money, IMHO.

VERY true Ken!

Those threads are a 6 pitch.  Believe me......compared to most threads, they seem to be a mile deep!

However with the correct tooling, proper inserts for the material being cut, and appropriate cutting parameters being followed.......it's a piece of cake!

Later,
Russ
