Truing Up A 6", 3 Jaw Lathe Chuck
#1
When I got the Jet 14 x 40 lathe, I used the 6", 3 jaw Bison chuck, I had and never used the 6", 3 jaw chuck, that came with the lathe. Today, I decided to fit it to the lathe and see how true it ran, right out of the box, the run-out was .031".

I completely disassembled the chuck, cleaning all surface, cleaned off all of the grit, grease and Chinese cosmolene. Using a stone, I removed a few burrs, and cleaned all of the mounting surfaces. I reassembled the chuck and made sure all of the jaw parts were in the right order, then remounted the chuck.

I then rechecked the run-out, realizing that a 3 jaw chuck, is not perfect, but the resulting less than .002" was much better than the original reading of .031".

.002 is pretty good for a 3jaw.

That's not bad at all for a 3-jaw chuck. Since you have the Bison, you might consider converting the Chinese chuck to a soft-jaw chuck. Could come in handy.
