Your questions are not ridiculous. We all started from knowing nothing about metalworking. We're just a little bit ahead of you, that's all. Your questions was actually a very good one since buying a 3-phase motor and VFD is not pocket change for most of us. You certainly don't need to convert your lathe if you are happy with the results you are getting. Hope this helps some.
