Hello WillBob, what's your lathe number stamped on the end of the bed? You write that your lathe is from 1940, and I am No. 2600, I could compare myself ..... Regards

Mine carries S.N. 2774, which Storebro Bruk told me was built in 1943.

Teraz wiem że moja jest z początku lat 40-tych albo i starsza....przedwojenna.......ale i tak jest to fajny sprzęt...... dziękuję i pozdrawiam

Could you please tell me what the device marked in the picture is for? . I don't have it

It isn't on mine either. Could it be some kind of carriage stop or thread gauge (although I don't see any connection to the leadscrew.)?
Mike

If you can't get one, make one.

It looks to me to be an older form of a "Trav-a-dial" that measures the distance the carriage travels using a rubber contact wheel against the front of the bed.

Mine has serial number 2952, Storebro said it was from 1944. You can contact Storebro to get more information.
