This is a good example that you can use other methods. Steve's sproket gears are a good alternate choice to timing pulleys and belt. The gearmotor looks similar to what I used. Around 1/10 HP is enough if the head is counter balanced. You will probably need more HP if you don't balance the head or you can gear it down to go slower.
