Darren,
Normally when I go for an oil blackened finish it's on an O1 part that has just been hardened. Pulling it out of the oil quench and heating it with the torch just enough to burn the oil off tempers it and leaves a nice black finish.
Basic heat treating in the shop is a good idea for another video. I'll add it to the list.
