Margarine and a teaspoon full of sugar in a cupped hand what I got doled out with as a kid to clean tar off my hands - works well, but then so does olive oil and sugar.
The Romans used olive oil to clean using a 'strigal' or scraper. I suppose that the sugar does the same as the scraper - the oil brings the filth to the surface and it gets scraped off.
