Russ,

I had them on but is was so hot & humid in the shop that I couldn't see out of them. I was taking a chance when blowing chips off, but mostly far enough away that there was no danger.

I knew sooner or later someone would hit me on that, but hey, I live to have excitement in my life! I ride a motorbike, I drive fast (rarely now), and I occasionally take off the safety glasses when they are more a hindrance than a benefit.

I do the same thing Ken. You develop a sort of sixth sense after a while that tells you when you need glasses and when you don't. I've had to have metal dug out my eyes two times and both times were early in my career. I got a chip once without glasses when I was young and stupid, and once while wearing safety glasses and it didn't help. A hot spark from a grinder went through the side shield like it wasn't even there and welded itself to my cornea. It wasn't one of my favorite experiences.

Two questions on the second video Ken. What was the alloy? And how many flutes on the end mill? That was an impressive stream of chips!

Come on Ken......not wearing safety glasses while putting your face inches away from a live cutting tool and blowing chips away with your mouth is NOT living to have excitement, that's just being plain foolish, everyone's thinking it......I'm just saying it!

Play it safe.....so you CAN ride your motorbike, and you can drive your car fast.......besides.......how are you going to make a living driving your car to do sales when you're blind in one or both of your eyes?

Not trying to be an asshole here.....just kicking my good friend in the seat of his pants before he hurts himself!

The material shown cutting is 6061-T651 solution treated aluminum. The cutter is a 1/2" (12.7mm) 2 flute High Speed Steel double-ended end mill cutting at 3000 rpm and 10 inches per minute for a .0015 inches per tooth feed rate. I probably could have upped it to twice that chip load per tooth, and did bump up to 15 ipm on the finish pass. You won't often see me milling with HSS except in aluminum and other non-ferrous metals or plastics.

As for cutting steel, I'll throw a piece of the 1018 cold rolled steel that Russ gifted me into the machine tonight and see what it can do with a solid carbide roughing end mill I have. Should be fun, though I'm just testing and not actually making any projects yet. I'm looking into making some bits & bobs for my motorcycle, including stainless steel bobbins for the rear swingarm to be able to lift on on the paddock stand I have. That stand is currently fitted with rubber-coated flat pads by the maker, Lockhart-Philips. I'll also make new V-shaped hooks for that out of steel, but I'll need to make some aluminum soft jaws for the vise to make those.

OK Russ, you've busted my balls enough that I promise to wear some eye protection every time I get to making chips.

Especially when making a video that you might see me not wearing them.
