Thanks Ken - I really appreciate the offer but it is mainly gears that I need to have made and a shaft (which is being made).

Standing next to my lathe yesterday, I've decided that raising it by 6" is going to be optimal.

You've come to a decision quite rapidly. Whenever I bent over to measure it the lathe seemed at a perfect height so dropped the idea until the next time I used the lathe.
 By the way, a belated happy Aussie Day! I was going to ask why you would celebrate the arrival of a boatload of criminals, but I thought better of it.
