Score! Bearing races
#1
Our sister company does the repair and rebuild work on some pretty large gearboxes from time to time.  A friend over there snagged me some used Timken tapered roller bearing races from the latest job.  They are considered scrap but I have used a 10" race to tram my mill.

The big race is about 8 3/8" diameter and the little ones are 5" diameter (roughly since bearings are usually provided in millimeters).  I will use them to support work on the mill that requires solid, stable fixturing and clearance from the table to protect the table from undesirable perforations, cuts or gouges!  I forgot to measure the height but they are roughly 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" tall.

I will be posting some work this spring using these races but right now I am busy finishing up hunting season.

Wanna sell me that big one? Those are ideal when you want to tram in the head on a turret mill/Brisgeport type milling machine.

First use a surface gauge and good dial test indicator on a good surface plate to check for flat and parallel, they usually are perfect. Now lay it on the milling machine table, centered to the spindle and run the indicator around it. much nicer than coming across the T-slots as I have to do until I can get my hands on one of those.

Yes, I've been looking for something like that for my mill.

Do you have any heavy equipment dealers in your area? I'm sure if I walked into the service department at the local CAT dealer and asked nicely, they could part with an old bearing race that had been replaced.  Chin

Can't think of anywhere locally that services equipment likely to have a bearing that size. I'll have another look though!

I have one about 5 inches in dia, wish I had bigger, (common problem) but they do work great for tramming.
Free advice is worth exactly what you payed for it.
