Help MYFORD RACK PINION ASSEMBLY.
#1
Hello, I have a tooth missing on the gear that interacts with the long toothed rack on my Myford ML7. I does not seem to affect the operation of the lathe. I have stripped the lathe apart for a deep clean and that is when I found it. Apart from replacing due to cost I would welcome ideas on how to fix this. There are two gears which I believe are pressed together and if I could get them apart I could perhaps drill where the missing tooth is tap the holes and fit studs then file to shape. Thank you all in advance. I tried to post a message earlier but I think that it failed.

Welcome to the forum bodger!

Can you post a picture of the damaged gear?

Hello, Thank you for the reply. I should have thought of that before I started putting it all back together. As you turn the wheel you can feel where the missing tooth is but as the other teeth on either side of the damaged one still mesh with the rack it will not affect what I want do do on the lathe but it would be nice to fix it. The damaged gear is at the end of a short shaft just a few inches long and there is a larger gear on the shaft up against the damaged one. If I was going to drill tap and insert studs where the damaged tooth is I could not file to shape unless I got the other larger gear off. I looks as if it is shrunk on to the shaft. I have a 20 ton bottle jack and may put something together and see if i can remove the larger gear. That is for the future as I want to get the lathe up and running. Any ideas would be welcom.

Hello all, I am a little disappointed that I have had only one reply to my post and that was only to ask for a picture. As well over a hundred people read it I assumed that there would have been someone who had had some experience of this. Thank you all who read it.

Most of those views are web bots. There aren't a lot of us active here, and without a picture, it's hard to give sound advice.
Full of ideas, but slow to produce parts

I'm sorry if my reply wasn't acceptable to you but I'm more of a visual person so a picture is worth a thousand words.

I don't have a Myford and I don't believe I've ever even seen one. But if I saw a picture of the gear I might be able to point you in a direction. I didn't respond earlier 'cuze Ed already asked for a pic and I still haven't seen one.

Hello, Thank you all for the replies. The damaged gear has been put back in the lathe and after the lathe has been rebuilt, sometime in the future. if there is a problem with the gear I will take it out and put a picture on. I was hoping that a Myford expert knew exactly which gear that I was talking about and had come across this problem. I will take a screen shot of one if there is one on ebay and try and post it here.

Hello, I have found pictures of the gear assembly on ebay, taken screenshots but cannot attach them to a post. I am not good with modern technology and although I have tried to follow advice already on this site it does not work for me. I must be doing something wrong. Help needed. Thank you.
