Ok guys I was on my way home from the in-laws the other day and seen this laying beside the road for the junk man to pick up so i had to turn around and was looking at it as the old man seen me and came out of his house and walked down he asked it I wanted it well of course I do I said and he told me he would get his front end loader to put it on my truck for me so far this thing is in great shape for its age other than someone used it as a wood lathe it still runs very smooth any info on this old atlas would be great i do know some about it but when I Google it I don't get much on this model witch is a V42 so im pretty sure its vertical shaft and 42 in bed so its like 24 inches between centers but that's about all I know I don't have a chuck key or any of the change gears what you see in the pics is what Ive got... thanks guys
After looking at the motor I don't thing its OEM but its 1/2hp and is about 40lb everything needs rewired also came with a Dumore grinder?? I think is what it is check out the pics it also works but needs new wiring.
If someone wants more pics of something on it let me know..

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a nice old lathe!
You should post an introduction in the appropriate section at the top of the list of forum sections.
I take it you aren't familiar with Dumore toolpost grinders. It's a mice accessory to have for close tolerance, fine finish bores and outside diameters. Yours seems to have a small diameter spindle for internal work. Did it come with any other accessories such as wheels, a guard and more spindles? While they are referred to as toolpost grinders, that one is unusual in that it seems to mount directly to the cross slide. I'd not seen one like that before now.
How about the lathe itself? Do you have any tooling of your own that you had before you came upon this "gift"?

Pixman Ive been around machining all my life and I have a few other lathes and a mill but have been doing it myself for about two years now this was a lucky find and I also have a Dumore tool post grinder for my lathes but this one isn't a tool post grinder that we all think of its really made for armature's I forget what it did but I think that's what it was for and what you see is what I got I even asked the man if he wanted anything for it and he said yea I want it gone lol so i made that happen the ways all look very nice and as I said this was use as a wood lathe not a metal lathe but the head does have babbit bearings although im lucky they are in very good shape but maybe someone out their would know more about the dumore grinder im only guessing and I had a friend also say the same thing about it so im not 100% on it...

Over here we can only dream about such finds. All I get on the way back from the outlaws is a headache! That is a nice looking lathe and I'd be interested to see more on the grinder.
I'd be inclined to drop a case of good quality beer off at the old guy's house.

Could it be a mica under cutter for cutting between the copper commutator sections after turning the com. on the lathe?
Steve yes that is what the dumore is for I think they call it a mica undercutter its in very good shape it just needs rewired along with the lathe motor and after looking at the lathe motor closer I don't think its the OEM motor but its deff from the 40s 50s for a 1/2 hp motor its about 40lb and runs very smooth! The old man that had it i pass all the time and he wont take anything for it he's just thankful it went to someone that will put it to use and take care of it.. Im looking for a parts layout for it so when I take it apart and clean it all up I can put it back together the right way its a model V-42 serial number 036056.. so if anyone has any PDF files for this machine please pass them on..

Take plenty of pictures at each stage of dis-assembly, even if you do find PDFs for it. It'll make things a lot easier. Please keep us posted on the refurbishment.
