Hay Dave,
Why don't you just make a fixture to hold the top die to the press ram and when the return springs on the press retract the ram it will lift the top die at the same time? Just a thought.

Good thought Jerry,
Initially I was thinking to do just that my only concern now is the return springs will not be strong enough to lift the top die. The top die is quite heavy about 14lbs. I might just try it see what happens - nothing to lose.

Looks like tomorrow is a welding day, oh how I look froward to welding days
So guys how do I weld the top die to the guides.
I know I should tack it top and bottom to the guides (both sides) then what?

I tend to pray a little bit and then get ready to curse.

"WW II" no longer stands for world war 2, it now means " welding wusses both of you".
Get some scrap, weld for 10 - 15 minutes then "git er done" .
Then have a beer (not necessarily in that order).
No pics of failure permitted!
Dave when you test your return springs load capacity, work from the middle of the rams stroke.
You will only need a couple inches of throw anyway.
