Screw the lock nuts back on the spindle first to save the threads in case of an errant hammer swing though. If I remember correctly my original bearings weren't that tight of a fit on mine which was part of the problem in the first place.

Yeah you need good solid support under the bearing for it to work well. The wood and cardboard have too much "give" and you loose energy from the hammer blows. Even my bench vice has failed me a couple of times because it is bolted to a wooden bench. Using steel supports on my basement concrete floor goes a lot easier, but we have to work with what we have on hand I know. What type of bearing puller did you order?
