The price I stated is in GBP. Looking at those selling in US, it is definitely overpriced.
I've looked at some of the mods done. The moveable jaw on this taiwanese saw is somewhat different from those mods I've seen. But some are usable. Just joined the 4x6 yahoo group, waiting for approval (been 3 days...).

Ouch! Unfortunately, though you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We are in a similar situation here, so I know how expensive and frustrating it is.
An expat in Sg also shared on my blog that it should be 1/2 the price. He bought the same saw at the same shop.

Wong, I imagine you're well on your way, having joined the Yahoo group, but, for what it's worth, to cut a short piece like that you'd need an equal sized (equal to the dia, of your piece) in the vice on the other side of the moveable jaw in order to get any clamping force. Along with the aforementioned piece you could put a flat piece, as long as required, upright against the moveable jaw acting like a jaw extension.
You could always drill and tap a hole on the LH side of the movable jaw and screw a bolt in/out to the length desired to stop the jaw from cocking.
